Special mention for Moeen. What a BATSMAN.

Sven Roeder 2:19 Fri Jul 7
Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Worst situation.
Last pair smacks you around for 45 in 4 overs and then you have to come out and bat for 15 mins

Good come back and great to see Broad get some runs. Even Jimmy hit a 6!

Coffee 2:14 Fri Jul 7
Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
458 all out

What a stunningly good total. Nobody could have predicted such a score this time yesterday.

Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
I don't think the 'not attempting a run' thing applies in that case where a fielder other than the keeper gets involved
Law 38.1(b) & 38.2

How the fuck is a spinner who almost walks up getting anywhere near a no-ball anyway?

The problem with that theory is that Root never attempted a run. Couldn't be run out, irrespective of what de Kock did or didn't do.

By spinners' standards, that was a huge no-ball.

The golden rule is the ball cannot land between the fielder and the boundary, if the fielder is meant to start close to the boundary in the first place.

When the ball is hit, you are 5 yards in. Nothing else to add. You'd better pay attention.

Sven Roeder 12:36 Fri Jul 7
Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
The Law says that you can't be given out run out if you can be given out stumped
And as it's a no-ball the stumping is overturned
I imagine if the keeper had fumbled the ball to slip who had thrown down the wicket or the keeper had caught it and handed it to slip who did the same it would have been run out.
Though of course at that point they didn't know it was a no-ball.

Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Or a third go when your spinner bowls a no-ball

Understand the stumping was turned down as a no ball. Why didn't SA just appeal for a run out?

Have seen fielders throw down the stumps, from silly mid off/on when batters have just been out of their ground, but not attempting a run, been given out, run out.

Ah ok, that was another one then

Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Went straight through his hands above his head.
Seemed to duck under it a bit, sort of catch you'd be disappointed to drop.
Might have been Duminy
Everyone gives chances but you cant afford to give someone as good as Root a second go.
Or a third go when your spinner bowls a no-ball

Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Root was dropped at Gully on 20 odd

Far Cough 9:17 Thu Jul 6
Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Sven, Root wasn't dropped, the bloke completely missed it out on the boundary by being in the wrong position

Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Good to see Ballance continue where he left off

Well done Root, Stokes and Mo saved us from the all so typical batting collapse

Sven Roeder 8:12 Thu Jul 6
Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Only managed 87 overs in 6 and a half hours
I'd require 96 overs and if you are 9 short add 45 runs to the score as SUNDRIES

You don't drop Joe ROOT or get him stumped off no-balls without causing yourself major problems.

Far Cough 8:05 Thu Jul 6
Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Root is the fucking bollocks

Sven Roeder 7:52 Thu Jul 6

Ali & Root taking it away
Maharaj the S African spinner 0/107 off 22
Neither as good or as white as Simon Harmer

Cook caught by De Kock?

I bet that hurt?

Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
ED - Identify someone who is a solid enough batsman, but most importantly has the skills to be a leader of men.

That''s the problem ED, apart from Cook, Bairstow and Root, I don't see any current batsmen worth a place in the side, let alone be captain as well.

Is there any sport that lends its self better to statistical frivolity than cricket?

Yeah... Horse Racing..... stats galore

Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
England seem to be locked in this trap of appointing their current best player as captain, and it's doomed to fail. The last time we picked someone to captain based on the fact he had the fundamentals you'd want in a captain, it was Andrew Strauss, and he was superb.

Cook should never have been captain, and Root definitely should not, certainly not right now.

Identify someone who is a solid enough batsman, but most importantly has the skills to be a leader of men. And someone who will NOT pick his mates.
